ISLANDS

La Palma

Filter:

A volcanically active Canary Island nicknamed La Isla Bonita, with steep rugged terrain and dark-sky reserves.

Geography

La Palma is the steepest island per area in the world, rising to Roque de los Muchachos at 2,426 m within a 30 km span. The summit is occupied by one of the world’s foremost optical observatories, the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory.

Geology

A 2021 eruption on the Cumbre Vieja ridge lasted 85 days, the longest historical eruption on the island. It destroyed roughly 1,600 buildings and added new land to the southwest coast.

Climate

Trade winds and sheltered terrain make for very dark night skies, and La Palma was designated the world’s first UNESCO Starlight Reserve in 2007.
