The third-largest of the Canary Islands and a circular volcanic island known for its striking interior landscapes.
Geography
Gran Canaria is roughly circular, with a mountainous interior radiating ravines down to the coast. Pico de las Nieves, at 1,956 m, is near the center of the island. The Roque Nublo, a basalt monolith rising 80 m above its ridge, is a national symbol.
Climate
Like other Canary Islands, Gran Canaria has been called a “miniature continent” because of the range of climates and landscapes packed into a small area, from arid southern dunes to pine forests on the northern slopes.
Population
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, on the northeast coast, is the joint capital of the Canary Islands and one of Spain’s largest cities by population.
