The world's largest island, an autonomous territory of Denmark covered overwhelmingly by an ice sheet.
Geography
Greenland is roughly three times the area of Texas, yet roughly 80 percent of its surface is buried under the Greenland Ice Sheet, which holds enough ice to raise global sea levels by about 7 m if entirely melted. Gunnbjørn Fjeld in the east is the highest point at 3,694 m.
Population
Most of the roughly 56,000 inhabitants live on the western coast in small towns. The capital Nuuk, with about 19,000 residents, is the only town with more than 10,000 people.
Politics
Greenland is a self-governing constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark. Denmark retains responsibility for defense and foreign affairs.
