Filter:

An archipelago of about 700 islands and 2,400 cays stretching across the western North Atlantic.

Geography

History

The Bahamas was the site of Christopher Columbus’s first New World landfall in 1492, traditionally identified as Guanahani in the central archipelago. The country gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1973.

Population

New Providence Island, where the capital Nassau sits, holds about 70 percent of the population despite being a small island in the central archipelago.
