ISLANDS

Hispaniola

Filter:

Second-largest Caribbean island, shared between Haiti in the west and the Dominican Republic in the east.

Geography

Hispaniola is the most mountainous island in the Caribbean. The Cordillera Central, running east to west, contains Pico Duarte in the Dominican Republic — the tallest peak in the West Indies at 3,098 m. Lake Enriquillo, a saline lake roughly 40 m below sea level, occupies a rift basin in the southwest.

Politics

The island is divided between two sovereign states. The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two-thirds while Haiti occupies the western third. The border, established in 1929, has been the subject of long-standing disputes.

History

Hispaniola was the first European colony in the New World, claimed for Spain by Christopher Columbus in 1492. France took control of the western portion in 1697, leading to the eventual partition.
