Third-largest island of the Greater Antilles, lying south of Cuba and west of Hispaniola.
Geography
Jamaica is roughly 235 km long and 80 km wide. The Blue Mountains in the east contain the highest peak, Blue Mountain Peak at 2,256 m, and produce one of the world’s most famous coffees. Karst limestone covers much of the interior, including the rugged Cockpit Country.
Climate
The island has a tropical maritime climate. The north and east receive heavy rainfall while the south coast is drier. Hurricane season runs from June to November.
Culture
Jamaica is internationally known for reggae music, the Rastafari movement, and athletes such as Usain Bolt. English is the official language alongside the widely spoken Jamaican Patois.
