Geography
Rhodes is roughly 80 km long and 38 km wide. A central mountain spine runs the length of the island, with Mount Attavyros the highest peak at 1,216 m. The northern tip lies about 18 km from the Turkish coast.
History
The Colossus of Rhodes, a giant bronze statue of the sun god Helios, stood at the harbor entrance from 280 to 226 BCE and was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Knights of Saint John ruled the island from 1310 to 1522, leaving fortifications that still ring the medieval city.
Tourism
Rhodes is one of the most visited islands in Greece, with seasonal flights from across Europe arriving daily during the summer.
