A dramatic desert succulent forming spiny rosettes, native to arid regions of the Americas and famous as the source of tequila and mezcal spirits.
Description
Agaves form large rosettes of thick, fleshy, blue-green leaves edged with sharp teeth and tipped with a needle-like spine. After many decades, the plant produces a single towering flower stalk and then dies.
Cultivation
Drought tolerant and frost hardy in some species, agaves thrive in lean, gritty soil with full sun. They are widely grown in xeriscape gardens and Mediterranean climates.
Uses
The blue agave is the sole source of tequila, while other species yield mezcal, agave syrup, sisal fiber, and ornamental landscape plantings.
