Aspidistra

Aspidistra elatior

Filter:

A tough, broad-leaved evergreen houseplant from East Asia known as the cast-iron plant for its near-indestructible tolerance of low light and neglect.

Description

Aspidistra produces large, glossy, dark green strap-shaped leaves rising directly from a creeping underground rhizome. Tiny brownish flowers appear at soil level and are rarely noticed.

Cultivation

Famous for thriving in dim Victorian parlours, it copes with low light, dry air, dust, and irregular watering. Bright sun scorches the leaves.

Uses

A long-lived classic houseplant and a staple cut foliage in florist work, aspidistra is also used as a tough groundcover in mild-climate shade gardens.
