A succulent plant native to the Arabian Peninsula, prized for the soothing gel in its thick fleshy leaves and grown worldwide as a houseplant.
Description
Aloe vera grows as a stemless or short-stemmed succulent with thick, fleshy, green leaves edged with small white teeth. Mature plants can produce yellow tubular flowers on a tall spike.
Cultivation
Native to the dry climates of the Arabian Peninsula, it is now cultivated worldwide. As a houseplant it tolerates neglect, infrequent watering, bright indirect light, and well-draining soil suit it best.
Uses
The clear gel inside the leaves is widely used in cosmetics, skin treatments, and burn relief. Aloe juice is sold as a digestive supplement. The yellow latex just under the leaf skin is a strong laxative and best avoided.
