A compact flowering houseplant from East African cloud forests, famous for its fuzzy leaves and clusters of violet, pink, or white blooms throughout the year.
Description
African violets form low rosettes of velvety, dark green leaves with scalloped edges. Above the foliage rise short stems carrying five-petaled flowers in shades of purple, pink, blue, or white.
Cultivation
They prefer bright indirect light, even moisture from the base, and warm room temperatures. Cold water on the leaves can leave permanent spots, so bottom watering is recommended.
Uses
A staple of the windowsill houseplant trade since the 1890s, African violets are bred in thousands of cultivars by hobbyists worldwide and are valued for blooming nearly year-round indoors.
