A diverse group of giant evergreen grasses from Asia and the Americas, famous for hollow jointed stems, rapid growth, and uses from food to construction.
Description
Bamboos are giant woody grasses with jointed culms and lance-shaped leaves. Some species are small clumping shrubs, while others reach 30 metres tall with stems as thick as a person’s arm.
Cultivation
Running types spread aggressively by rhizome and need root barriers in gardens. Clumping varieties stay tidy and are safer choices outside their native range.
Uses
Bamboo is a major building material, source of scaffolding, flooring, paper pulp, and fabric. Young shoots are eaten in Asian cuisines and the plant is staple food of giant pandas.
