A tropical American houseplant grown for its glossy waxy flowers in red, pink, or white, formed by a brightly colored leaf-like spathe and slender spadix.
Description
Anthuriums have heart-shaped dark green leaves and produce showy heart-shaped spathes that look like polished flowers. The true tiny flowers cluster on the central spadix.
Cultivation
They like warm humid rooms, bright filtered light, and a chunky aroid mix that drains fast. Sap can irritate skin and is toxic to pets if chewed.
Uses
Long-lasting both as a potted houseplant and a cut flower, anthuriums are major exports from Dutch and Hawaiian growers and a staple of tropical floristry.
