A group of epiphytic bromeliads that grow without soil, absorbing moisture and nutrients through their leaves and clinging to bark, rocks, or wires.
Description
Air plants form small rosettes of slender, silvery-green leaves coated in tiny absorbent scales called trichomes. Many species blush red and produce purple flowers at bloom time.
Cultivation
They need no soil. A weekly soak or misting plus bright indirect light keeps them healthy. Good air circulation between waterings prevents rot.
Uses
Air plants are popular in terrariums, mounted displays, seashells, and wire frames. Their adaptability has made them one of the most fashionable houseplant groups of recent decades.
