Ajuga

Ajuga reptans

Filter:

A low spreading evergreen groundcover from Europe and Asia, prized in shade gardens for its purple-bronze leaves and short spikes of blue spring flowers.

Description

Also called bugleweed, ajuga forms a dense carpet of glossy oval leaves that vary from green to deep bronze or variegated. In spring it sends up short whorled spikes of blue, purple, or pink flowers.

Cultivation

It spreads by stolons and roots easily, thriving in moist shade but tolerating sun in cool climates. Once established it crowds out weeds effectively.

Uses

Ajuga is widely planted as a low-maintenance groundcover under shrubs and trees. It was also used historically in herbal medicine for treating bruises and minor wounds.
