What ushers do

Ushers greet patrons at venue entrances, scan or check tickets, guide guests to their seats, distribute programs, and respond to spills, complaints, and medical issues. At intermission they monitor exits and answer questions about facilities.

Training path

Most jobs require only a short orientation, with on-the-job mentoring covering venue layouts, accessibility policies, and emergency procedures. CPR or basic first-aid certifications are common preferences.

Work setting

Ushers are employed by Broadway and regional theaters, Major League Baseball stadiums, NFL and NBA arenas, opera houses, college football stadiums, and large concert venues. Evening and weekend shifts dominate.
