X-ray technicians, also called radiologic technologists, position patients and operate imaging equipment to capture diagnostic radiographs of bones, joints, and chest cavities. They follow radiation-safety protocols and prepare images for radiologists to interpret.

Training path

Most enter the field via a two-year associate degree in radiologic technology, followed by ARRT certification and state licensure. Some pursue four-year bachelor’s degrees for more advanced modalities like CT or MRI.

Work setting

Employment is concentrated in hospital radiology departments, outpatient imaging centers, urgent care clinics, and physician offices. Shifts can include nights, weekends, and on-call rotation for trauma centers.
