PROFESSIONS

Xenobiologist

Filter:

A research scientist who studies hypothetical life forms beyond Earth and the biology of extreme environments.

What xenobiologists do

Xenobiologists research how life could form, persist, and evolve outside Earth’s typical biosphere. They model possible biochemistries, study extremophile organisms in hydrothermal vents and ice caps, and analyze samples returned from planetary missions for biosignatures.

Training path

A doctorate in astrobiology, microbiology, biochemistry, or planetary science is standard. Postdoctoral fellowships at NASA-funded centers, the SETI Institute, or major research universities are typical before securing a faculty or staff scientist role.

Work setting

Most work at universities, federal labs, or space-agency centers such as NASA Ames or ESA’s astrobiology programs. Fieldwork can take xenobiologists to Antarctica, hydrothermal vents, or high-altitude desert analog sites.
