An earth scientist who studies the physical, chemical, biological, and geological processes of the world's oceans.
What oceanographers do
Oceanographers measure currents, temperature, salinity, biology, and seafloor geology. They model how the oceans circulate heat and carbon, study coastal erosion and storm surge, and assess fisheries and pollution. Many spend weeks at sea on research cruises.
Training path
Bachelor’s degrees in oceanography, physics, biology, or geology lead to entry-level technician work. Most research scientists hold a master’s or doctorate, often paired with postdoctoral appointments at major oceanographic institutions.
Work setting
Major employers include the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the US Navy, and state coastal-resource agencies.
