A zoologist who specializes in the study of birds, including their behavior, ecology, and evolution.
What ornithologists do
Ornithologists study bird populations through banding programs, point counts, acoustic surveys, and tracking technology, then publish on migration, breeding success, and conservation status. Many also help develop habitat policy and recovery plans.
Training path
A bachelor’s in biology or zoology with strong field experience opens entry-level technician work. Master’s and doctoral degrees in ornithology, ecology, or wildlife biology are the norm for principal investigators.
Work setting
Employers include the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, US Fish and Wildlife Service, National Audubon Society, state wildlife departments, and the American Bird Conservancy. Many roles split between field seasons and writing time.
