Drag Racing

Filter:

A motor racing discipline in which two vehicles accelerate from a standing start along a straight quarter-mile or eighth-mile strip.

Origin and rules

Drag racing emerged in postwar California, where hot-rodders raced on long dry lake beds. The National Hot Rod Association was founded in 1951 to formalise the sport. Two cars run side-by-side from a standing start over a measured distance.

How it plays

Standard distances are a quarter-mile or, for top fuel and funny cars, 1000 feet. Reaction time and elapsed time decide the win. Top fuel dragsters can reach 540 kilometres per hour in under four seconds.

Competition

The NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series is the top professional championship in the United States, with major events including the US Nationals at Indianapolis. The categories include Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Motorcycle.
