A precision club-and-ball sport in which players hit a small ball into a series of holes in as few strokes as possible.
Origin and rules
The modern game was codified at St Andrews in Scotland in the 18th century, though stick-and-ball pastimes existed earlier in the Netherlands and beyond. A round is 18 holes, played by individual stroke or matchplay scoring.
How it plays
Players use a set of up to 14 clubs to advance the ball from a teeing area, through a fairway, around hazards, and onto a putting green where they sink it into a hole. The lowest score wins; in match play the most holes won decides the contest.
Competition
The four men’s majors are the Masters, PGA Championship, US Open, and Open Championship. Women’s majors and the Ryder, Presidents, and Solheim Cups headline team play. Golf returned to the Olympics in 2016 after a 112-year absence.
