Netball

Filter:

A non-contact team sport derived from basketball played mostly by women in seven assigned court zones.

Origin and rules

Netball emerged in 1890s England as a variant of basketball designed for women, with codified rules in 1901. Two teams of seven play on a court divided into thirds, each player restricted to designated zones.

How it plays

Players cannot dribble or run with the ball and must pass within three seconds. Only the goal attack and goal shoot may score, throwing into a ring without a backboard. Matches last four 15-minute quarters.

Competition

The Netball World Cup is held every four years, and the Commonwealth Games include the sport. Australia, New Zealand, England, and Jamaica dominate. Netball is widely played in Commonwealth nations though not yet Olympic.
