Rally

Filter:

A timed motor racing discipline contested over closed public roads of gravel, tarmac, snow, or dirt in production-based cars.

Origin and rules

Rallying dates to the Paris-Rouen race of 1894 and the Monte Carlo Rally of 1911. Crews of a driver and co-driver race against the clock on closed-road special stages, linked by transit sections on open roads.

How it plays

A driver pilots the car through stages while the co-driver reads pace notes describing every corner. Cumulative stage times decide the result. Events run several days, alternating between gravel, tarmac, snow, and mixed surfaces.

Competition

The FIA World Rally Championship is the top series, with rounds including Monte Carlo, Finland, Wales, and Kenya. Manufacturers such as Toyota, Hyundai, and Ford field the leading teams. Sebastien Loeb and Sebastien Ogier hold the most titles.
