A racquet sport played on a rectangular court where opponents hit a felt ball over a net using strung racquets.
Origin and rules
Lawn tennis was patented by Major Walter Clopton Wingfield in 1874 in England, evolving from older real tennis games. Players or pairs hit a felt-covered ball over a net, aiming to land it in the opposing court so the opponent cannot return it.
How it plays
A match is divided into sets and games, with scoring in 15, 30, 40, and game. Sets are won by reaching six games with a two-game margin or via tiebreak. Grand Slam men’s matches are best of five sets.
Competition
The four Grand Slams — the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open — anchor the calendar. The ATP and WTA Tours run year-round. Tennis returned to the Olympics at Seoul 1988 after a long absence.
