Ultimate Frisbee

Filter:

A non-contact team sport played by passing a flying disc, with points scored by catching the disc in the opposing end zone.

Origin and rules

Ultimate was invented in 1968 by students at Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey. The sport is famous for the Spirit of the Game ethic in which players self-officiate even at world championship level.

How it plays

Seven players per side advance the disc up a 110-metre field by passing only. Running with the disc is not allowed, and dropped or intercepted passes turn possession over. A point is scored when a teammate catches the disc in the end zone.

Competition

The WFDF World Ultimate Championships, World Under-24 Championships, and World Games circuit are the leading events. The United States, Canada, Japan, Colombia, and the United Kingdom dominate the elite ranks. Ultimate is recognised by the IOC but not on the Olympic programme.
