Wrestling (Greco-Roman)

Filter:

A classical Olympic wrestling style in which competitors may only attack and grip above the waist.

Origin and rules

Greco-Roman wrestling was systematised in 19th-century France, drawing inspiration from ancient Greek and Roman wrestling. Two wrestlers grapple on a circular mat with attacks restricted to upper-body grips, no leg holds permitted.

How it plays

Bouts run two three-minute periods. Wrestlers score by throwing the opponent to the mat, gaining exposure of the back, or controlling on the ground. Pinning both shoulders to the mat ends the match instantly.

Competition

The UWW World Wrestling Championships and the Olympic tournament are the top events. Russia, Iran, Cuba, Hungary, and Turkey have a strong Greco-Roman tradition. The style has been part of the modern Olympics since 1896.
