Wayne Gretzky

Filter:

Canadian ice hockey center widely considered the greatest player in NHL history, holding more than 60 league records when he retired.

Background

Born in Brantford, Ontario, Wayne Gretzky began skating at age 2 and was a major junior hockey star before turning professional with the Indianapolis Racers of the WHA at age 17.

Career

He joined the Edmonton Oilers in 1979 when the WHA merged with the NHL, won four Stanley Cups in five years, and was later traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 1988. He retired with the New York Rangers in 1999.

Style of play

Known as “The Great One,” Gretzky relied on anticipation, vision, and passing rather than physicality, often operating behind the opposition net in his “office” to set up teammates.
