A fast-paced team sport played on ice in which skaters shoot a puck into the opposing net with curved sticks.
Origin and rules
Modern ice hockey was codified at McGill University in Montreal in 1877. Two teams of six skaters, including a goaltender, race across an ice rink trying to shoot a vulcanized rubber puck into the opposing net.
How it plays
Professional games run three 20-minute periods. Players may check opponents within the rules, and infractions send them to the penalty box. Goals score one point. Ties are usually resolved by overtime and shootouts.
Competition
The NHL is the premier professional league. The IIHF World Championship and the Olympic tournament headline international play. Canada, the United States, Sweden, Finland, and Russia traditionally dominate. Ice hockey joined the Olympics in 1920.
