A remote South Pacific island, the only inhabited member of the Pitcairn Islands group and a British Overseas Territory.
Geography
Pitcairn is a small volcanic island roughly 2 km long, with rugged cliffs and a single tiny harbor at Bounty Bay. Its highest point, Pawala Valley Ridge, reaches 347 m.
History
The current population descends from nine HMS Bounty mutineers and a group of Tahitians who settled the island in 1790 after burning the ship at what is now Bounty Bay. The mutiny against Captain William Bligh remains one of the most famous in naval history.
Population
Pitcairn is among the world’s least populous jurisdictions. Most residents share the surnames Christian, Young, Warren, or Brown, traced to the original settlers.
