Geography
The main island is roughly 170 km long and 60 km wide. The Cordillera Central runs east to west through the interior, with Cerro de Punta the highest point at 1,338 m. El Yunque National Forest, in the northeast, is the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest System.
Status
Puerto Rico has been a United States territory since 1898. Residents are United States citizens but cannot vote in presidential elections while residing on the island. Several status referendums on statehood have been held since the 1960s.
Culture
Spanish and English are official languages. San Juan, the capital, contains Old San Juan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site enclosed by 16th-century Spanish fortifications.
