A developer who designs and codes video games, balancing gameplay, graphics, and performance.
What game developers do
Game developers build engines, gameplay systems, graphics pipelines, networking layers, and tools. They tune performance, fix bugs, support artists with engine features, and ship games to consoles, PCs, and mobile platforms.
Training path
Most US game developers hold a bachelor’s degree in computer science, game development, or a related field. Many also build personal projects and game jams to develop portfolios. Studios value problem-solving and shipped titles, even from student or indie work.
Engines
Common engines include Unreal Engine, Unity, and Godot, with proprietary engines used by large studios such as Frostbite, RE Engine, and Decima. Web games run on HTML5 Canvas, WebGL, and WebGPU.
