PROFESSIONS

Sheriff

Filter:

An elected county law enforcement officer responsible for serving warrants, running jails, and patrolling unincorporated areas.

What sheriffs do

County sheriffs run their department’s jail and corrections operations, supervise patrol of unincorporated areas, serve civil and criminal warrants, provide security in county courthouses, and lead specialized units such as marine, mounted, and search and rescue.

Training path

Most sheriffs begin as patrol deputies after completing a police academy. They typically advance through sergeant and lieutenant ranks, complete the FBI National Academy or similar executive programs, and then stand for election.

Work setting

Sheriffs are elected officials in nearly every US county. Office size ranges from one-or-two-deputy rural posts to massive departments such as the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the largest sheriff’s office in the country.
