PROFESSIONS

Screenwriter

Filter:

A writer who creates scripts for film, television, and streaming series.

What screenwriters do

Screenwriters develop original ideas or adapt existing material into scripts. Feature writers work for months on a draft before notes and revisions. Television writers serve in rooms, breaking story, writing episodes, and producing on set.

Training path

Many US screenwriters attend film school or take writing workshops, then break in through script competitions, fellowships, and representation by agents and managers. Membership in the Writers Guild of America comes with first paid credits in covered media.

Settings

Screenwriters work on studio features, independent films, streaming and network series, animation, video games, branded content, and adaptation from books and graphic novels. Many also write spec scripts that secure assignments rather than sell directly.
