What soldiers do

Soldiers train and operate as part of squads, platoons, companies, and larger units. They master infantry, armor, artillery, signal, logistics, intelligence, medical, or other military specialties, and serve at home stations and on deployments overseas.

Training path

US soldiers enlist after high school or college and complete basic combat training, followed by advanced individual training for a specific military occupational specialty. Officers earn commissions through ROTC, the US Military Academy at West Point, or Officer Candidate School.
