What social workers do

Training path

US social workers earn a bachelor’s degree for entry-level roles. Clinical social workers complete a master’s of social work and a supervised licensure path leading to LCSW or LICSW credentials. Specializations include healthcare, schools, child welfare, and behavioral health.

Settings

Social workers staff hospitals and hospices, public schools, child protective services, mental health clinics, veterans hospitals, community mental health centers, courts, and private therapy practices. Many also work in policy and program evaluation.
