What stewards do

Stewards manage day-to-day comforts of passengers and guests. On ships and yachts, they handle cabin upkeep, provisioning, table service, and concierge requests. On aircraft, the term is interchangeable with flight attendant. Estate stewards manage household operations.

Training path

Cruise and yacht stewards typically attend programs such as MCA STCW basic safety training and earn an ENG1 medical certificate. Yacht stewards often complete an interior crew course covering housekeeping, wine service, and guest etiquette.

Work setting

Employers include major cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Princess; private yacht owners cruising the Mediterranean and Caribbean; private aircraft operators; country clubs; and large private estates with formal household staff.
