An animal-care clinician who assists veterinarians with diagnostics, surgery, and patient nursing.
What veterinary technicians do
Vet techs perform intake exams, draw blood, run lab tests, take x-rays, induce and monitor anesthesia, assist in surgery, administer medications, and counsel pet owners on home care after the doctor diagnoses the problem.
Training path
The standard credential is an associate’s degree in veterinary technology from an AVMA-accredited program. Graduates take the Veterinary Technician National Examination and register with their state board to become RVTs, CVTs, or LVTs.
Work setting
Most vet techs work in small-animal clinics and emergency animal hospitals. Specialists work in equine practice, exotic-animal medicine, research labs, zoos, and pharmaceutical companies. Nights, weekends, and on-call shifts are common in ER hospitals.
