A career-services professional who helps clients identify and pursue suitable jobs and training programs.
What vocational counselors do
Vocational counselors meet with job seekers, students, and rehabilitation clients to assess interests and aptitudes, recommend training or apprenticeship paths, coach interview and resume skills, and connect clients with employer partners or workforce-development funding.
Training path
Most positions require a master’s degree in vocational rehabilitation counseling, mental-health counseling, or career development. The Certified Rehabilitation Counselor credential is standard for working in state vocational-rehabilitation agencies.
Work setting
Employers include state vocational-rehabilitation departments, community colleges, K-12 districts, workforce-investment boards, veterans’ programs, and nonprofit reentry services. Caseloads can mix in-person and virtual meetings.
