A counselor who guides high school students through college selection, applications, and financial aid.
What college counselors do
College counselors help students inventory their academic record and interests, build balanced college lists, plan testing and visits, refine essays, complete applications, and navigate financial aid. They also support juniors and seniors through deadlines and acceptance decisions.
Training path
Most US college counselors in public schools hold a master’s degree in school counseling and state licensure. Independent educational consultants come from teaching, admissions, or counseling backgrounds and may earn certifications from IECA or NACAC.
Settings
College counselors work in high schools, independent practices serving private clients, community-based access programs, and college admissions offices. Many former admissions officers transition into counseling after leaving university roles.
