An agricultural professional who oversees grape cultivation from pruning through harvest for winemaking.
What vineyard managers do
Vineyard managers plan and supervise every stage of grape production, from winter pruning and trellis maintenance to spring shoot thinning, summer canopy work, and harvest scheduling. They monitor soil moisture, brix, and pest pressure throughout the season.
Training path
A bachelor’s degree in viticulture, horticulture, or agronomy is typical, with deep apprenticeship time under an established manager. UC Davis, Cornell, and Washington State are major training centers for North American viticulture.
Work setting
Most positions exist in wine-grape regions such as Napa, Sonoma, the Finger Lakes, Willamette Valley, and the Columbia Valley. Many managers oversee multiple ranches for large producers or consult for boutique growers.
