A mental-health and social-services professional who supports adolescents through emotional, behavioral, and family challenges.
What youth counselors do
Youth counselors conduct individual and group counseling sessions with teens, build treatment plans, coordinate with families and schools, and monitor progress through behavioral milestones. Many specialize in addiction recovery, foster care, or court-involved youth.
Training path
A bachelor’s in psychology or social work is the minimum, but most clinical roles require a master’s in counseling, social work, or mental-health counseling. State licensure as an LPC, LCSW, or LMHC is needed for independent practice.
Work setting
Employers include public school districts, residential treatment programs, juvenile detention centers, group homes, nonprofit youth services, and community mental-health agencies. Hours can include evenings and on-call shifts.
