What waitresses do
Waitresses greet seated guests, describe specials and answer menu questions, take orders accurately, deliver food and drinks at appropriate timing, refill beverages, present checks, and process payments. Many also fold napkins, polish silverware, and reset tables between seatings.
Training path
The role is learned on the job, but most jurisdictions require a food-handler card. ServSafe Food Handler certification is the most common. Higher-end restaurants train staff on wine pairings, dining etiquette, and floor protocols over several weeks.
Work setting
Casual chains, diners, fine-dining restaurants, hotel dining rooms, banquet halls, and resort restaurants all employ waitresses. Tips constitute the majority of total income in most US restaurants and are pooled or kept individually depending on the house policy.
