A motorised water sport in which riders race or perform freestyle on a personal watercraft over a buoyed course.
Origin and rules
Personal watercraft were popularised in 1973 when Kawasaki launched its Jet Ski standup model. The International Jet Sports Boating Association was formed in 1982 and now runs a world tour across multiple craft classes.
How it plays
Race formats include closed-course buoy racing, slalom, endurance, and offshore. Freestyle riders score on aerial tricks performed on standup skis. Bouts are judged or timed depending on the discipline.
Competition
The IJSBA World Finals on Lake Havasu in Arizona is the season-ending championship. France, the United States, Thailand, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates have produced top racers. Jet skiing is not on the Olympic programme.
