A historic mounted combat sport in which two armoured riders charge at each other with lances and aim to strike a target.
Origin and rules
Jousting emerged in medieval France and the Holy Roman Empire as both military training and entertainment, peaking in popularity in the 14th and 15th centuries. A modern competitive revival took shape in the 1990s through several jousting associations.
How it plays
Two riders charge along opposite sides of a barrier called the tilt and try to break a wooden lance tip on the opponent’s shield or armour. Points are awarded for clean strikes, broken lances, and unhorsing the opponent over a set number of passes.
Competition
The International Jousting Association World Championship and the United States Jousting Association tournaments are the leading modern events. Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, and France field top competitors. Jousting is not an Olympic sport.
