A European bowling sport in which players roll a heavy ball at nine pins arranged in a diamond pattern on a narrow lane.
Origin and rules
Nine-pin bowling, called Kegeln in German, is one of the oldest bowling traditions, with archaeological evidence from medieval Germany and Switzerland. It survived the American 19th-century ban that produced ten-pin bowling.
How it plays
A player rolls a ball with no finger holes at nine pins set in a diamond. Scoring varies by format. Classic disciplines use four lane modes per round, with totals from full and clearance frames over 100 or 120 throws.
Competition
The World Ninepin Bowling Association runs separate Classic and Schere world championships. Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Austria, and Croatia are powerhouses. Nine-pin bowling is part of the World Games but not the Olympic programme.
