Quadball

Filter:

A mixed-gender team sport adapted from the fictional game of Quidditch, played on foot with a broom between the legs.

Origin and rules

Quadball was created at Middlebury College in Vermont in 2005 as a real-world adaptation of the fictional sport from the Harry Potter books. The international governing body renamed itself the International Quadball Association in 2022 to distance the sport from author J. K. Rowling.

How it plays

Seven players per side run with brooms held between their legs. Three chasers try to throw the quaffle through one of three hoops; two beaters knock opponents out of play with bludgers; a keeper defends; and a seeker chases a flag runner called the snitch to end the game.

Competition

The IQA World Cup is held every two or three years, with the United States, Australia, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom among the top nations. Quadball is not on the Olympic programme but is one of the fastest-growing mixed-gender team sports.
