Squash

Filter:

A racquet sport played in an enclosed four-walled court where players alternate hitting a small rubber ball against a front wall.

Origin and rules

Squash was invented around 1830 at Harrow School in England, where students discovered a punctured rubber ball would squash against the wall. Two players share a four-walled court and alternate striking a small rubber ball off the front wall.

How it plays

A match is best of five games to 11 points. The ball must bounce no more than once between shots and may use side and back walls. The reduced bounce and tight angles favour fitness, deception, and precise placement.

Competition

The PSA World Tour, the World Championships, and the British Open are headline events. Egypt, Pakistan, Australia, and England dominate. Squash will debut as an Olympic sport at Los Angeles 2028.
