Synchronized Swimming

Filter:

An aquatic Olympic sport blending swimming, dance, and gymnastics in choreographed routines performed in a pool.

Origin and rules

Synchronized swimming, also known as artistic swimming, originated in early-20th-century Canada and the United States as water ballet. Athletes perform choreographed routines combining elaborate movements above and below the waterline.

How it plays

Events include solos, duets, and team routines. Judges score on execution, artistic impression, and the difficulty of acrobatic lifts and required figures. Athletes hold their breath for long stretches while remaining in sync.

Competition

The World Aquatics Championships and the Olympic Games are the top events. Russia long dominated the sport; China, Japan, Spain, and Ukraine are also strong. Artistic swimming has been on the Olympic programme since 1984.
