Xare

Filter:

A Basque variant of pelota played with a leather glove that catches and hurls the ball against a court wall.

Origins

Xare is one of several court variants of the Basque pelota family, native to the Basque Country across the French-Spanish border. Like all pelota, it descends from the medieval European game of jeu de paume.

How it plays

Two players use a webbed catching glove called the xare to throw the ball against a stone wall called the fronton. Points are scored when the opponent fails to return the ball within the court boundaries.

Where it’s played

Xare and its sibling sports remain popular in the Basque Country, Navarre, and among Basque diasporas in Argentina, Uruguay, and the United States. The International Federation of Basque Pelota includes it on the World Championships programme.
